The plan was to make the 5:00a.m. sunrise at the summit and try to film a time lapse. Little did I realize that a little after 4:30 a.m. till about 5:00 a.m. I still had about an hour and a half left to go before summit, and light was starting to peak through the tree line.
It’s surreal being able to see the trail after hours of hiking in darkness with a headlamp lighting little parts of the path here and there. It was still somewhat quiet, though the mosquitos were starting to bite and the birds were starting to signal the start of the morning. Funny thing happened with my apple watch though. Taking a quick breather, the watch thought maybe something was wrong and wanted me to keep going. “You can’t stop now!” it seemed to say. “You’re so close to closing your move ring!”
Quick Tip or two:
Make sure your mosquito repellant is handy and your camera is too. There is nothing more frustrating than having to stop and hunt for the essentials delaying travel and potentially killing momentum. Even though the total pack weight was 20lbs, I wouldn’t have traded it for anything and I’ll show you why. The pack I was using and highly recommend is the:
Notice the zippered hip pockets?! Perfect for a Cell Phone/ Point & Shoot Camera as well as Mosquito repellent/Sunscreen. Easy Access with little fuss so you can keep hiking with little stoppage in your trip. There is a little room for a 3 liter water bladder which is also nice (and important-stay hydrated people!) This thing is very comfortable, roomy and my go to for the mountains. Speaking of which…
6:00 a.m.
A Little Over Half A Mile Left To Go!
As you can see, the trail is now well lit at this point and that five O’clock sunrise target has been blown out the window. (My thought at 4:30 a.m. was to give up and head back down because I would not be making that sunrise time lapse movie.) Another thought overrode the initial thought and that was how much of a shame it would be to get this far only to give up. Not going to happen. I was going to make it to the top again, only this time doing it solo. Time to make it happen!
