I’ve always grown up with a Lot of inspirational quotes like the one above, stating that ”If you can dream it, you can do it”-Walt Disney. I would think To myself all I have to do was dream about something and somehow as if by magic it would be! All I had to do was dream or imagine and the hard work was done. Boy was I wrong! Did I tell you that I was a little naive growing up? Its true. I suppose that’s how I wound up dropping out of WVU due to academic failure- I dreamt too much and didn’t put in the work.
Dreamer.
I was reminded (shortly after this unfortunate incident) that success would also require hard work ( to which i responded "what am I working for?!). An undergrad with an undeclared major, taking classes to figure it out with no concrete direction or idea of what I wanted to do. This was a very expensive lesson (tuition and financial aid expected to be repaid...Go figure!) but one that carries through today.
Taking another stab at the college deal in an attempt to earn a degree, I'm happy to say this part of the journey is almost at an end and soon I'll be the proud owner of a piece of paper that will declare: "BS!!!" But this expensive life journey revealed something extraordinary that I had to share. I finally had a direction and a goal, and had the tools to create an action plan to get it done. And it was ultimately possible with that initial dream.
Doer.
While the inspirational quotes are great in inspiring, they do little else to teach us ”how”. That part we have to figure out. One of the things I’ve come to realize is the power of belief, thought, dreams, and ideals. These dreams become the springboard for what happens next, and what the body and mind do, working as a team, is something just short of magic.
The body and mind have this ability and desire to be congruent (Congruent- “in agreement or harmony“) with each other. The body figures out a way to act in accordance with how the mind tells it it should, and vice versa. Touch a hot surface and the pain registers with the nerves, the nerves tell the brain which realizes this state isn’t normal and instructs the body to not do this again in the future.
The same holds true with our beliefs thoughts. How we think about ourselves is how our body thinks we should be
and will adjust the body mechanics to act in harmony with those thoughts. If we believe we are lazy our body will think this is normal and will adjust accordingly.
Time For Talk.
Eduardo is on to something, and I wish I had discovered this lesson a long time ago, but there's no point in living in the past because we can't change the past. We can only learn from it and grow for the future.
Time For Action.
What you believe about yourself and your situation will shape your behaviors into making this come true. It's all about congruency and making things harmonious. I feel the time is now to have a mindset that supports growth and the belief we can achieve the goals we want. We take little (mental) steps towards making this come true and soon the body will bring itself into alignment and soon we're well on our way to achieving these goals.
it all starts with a dream that turns into a goal, which will create our beliefs and soon our body follows and cultivates confidence. We will be faced with doubts that can derail us from the path we've chosen for ourselves. Will we let those doubts determine our future or will the beliefs in ourselves and goals be so strong it quiets that voice of doubt?
Let's find out.
