DJI Avata drone
DJI Avata

It's a big deal when drone manufacturer DJI makes an announcement because it signifies new product drops that always seem to take creators to places they couldn't go before and capture what was thought of as previously impossible.

The trend continues with the latest drone from the house of MAVIC.

Enter the DJI AVATA!

Touted as an FPV (First-Person View) drone, it gives the user the sensation of flight in real time by "seeing" from the drone's perspective using special goggles. This can also give the user the sensation of diving over cliffs, soaring over land and sea before swooping up into the clouds! What makes FPV unique over other regular "GPS" drones is the perspective that can be seen. "GPS" drones do not tilt up or down from the horizon (although these drones can fly up and down, the view of the horizon will remain constant). It's like jumping off a little hill and looking forward the whole time, where FPV is similar to jumping off that same hill but being able to look down to where you will eventually land.

For the longest time, drone setup for flight, in my opinion, has been clunky. It involved many steps that takes away from spontaneity and interrupts creativity.

  • You arrive at a site

  • pull out the drone

  • assemble the propellers

  • insert the batteries

  • fold out the drone arms

  • power up the drone

  • Connect your phone to the controller

  • power up the controller

  • wait for the fly application and controller to sync

  • wait for the controller and drone to sync

  • GO FLY!

With the emergence of the DJI Mini 3 Pro and the RC controller, the steps were simplified to :

  • Arrive at the site

  • pull out the drone

  • fold out the drone arms

  • power up the drone and controller

  • wait for both to sync with each other then GO FLY!

Quick and Easy....And it looks like the Avata will do the same for FPV drones as well!

What I Like About You!

What I find fascinating about the Avata is there are no drone arms to fold out or propellers to attach-there are propeller guards built into this tiny craft and the propellers will already be attached! This does a few things:

Less steps to get it up into the air AND more peace of mind for the pilot to take it places where he/she may not have taken a previous drone for fear of damage! This rugged beauty soars where eagles dare (at least that's the impression I get-I'll let you know once I can get my hands on one!!)

The Camera specs are nothing short of amazing: 48 MP photo resolution with a 4K 60 FPS video resolution. The video that can be recorded with this unit is smooth and sharp (from what I've seen so far on YouTube).

Final Thought:

This drones name is from a Finnish word meaning: "to open" or "to take off". It is aptly named if DJI's mission with this drone is to open a person's idea of what is possible with drone video and photography.. What was nice about the DJI Mini 3 Pro was the intuitive set up and relatively short time to get airborne and DJI has been able to transfer those advantages to an FPV model.

If a drone is easy to set up and fly then there will be more enjoyment from the overall experience. I cannot wait to personally fly this drone and see what it can do. If you've had experience with the Avata drop a line and let me know what you like or don't like.

Looking forward to hearing from you and seeing what you've done with this drone!
